The 3 types of Cloud Computing

The 3 types of Cloud Computing

Cloud computing helps businesses to work more efficiently and save on additional cost for software and hardware that are important for different operations. Companies can use cloud based technology to increase their IT functionality or capacity without having to add software, personnel, invest in additional training or set up new infrastructure. Depending on the needs of users, any type of cloud computing service is used either individually or in combination with others. Below are the major types of cloud computing:

1. Software as a Service (SaaS)

SaaS is also known as “on-demand software”. Software as a service (SaaS) allows users to connect to and use cloud-based apps over the Internet. Instead of fully buying the license of various software, users of SAAS service hire the software at regular intervals and use it through an Internet browser. For eg- Email, calendaring and office tools. Users rent the use of an app for their organisation and connect to it over the Internet, usually with a web browser. All of the underlying infrastructure, middleware, app software and app data are located in the service provider’s data center.

The cloud service provider manages the hardware and software and with the appropriate service agreement, will ensure the availability and the security of the app and data. SaaS allows organisation to get quickly up and running with an app at minimal upfront cost.

The benefits of SaaS :-

Access data in app from anywhere- With data stored in the cloud, users can access their information from any Internet-connected computer or mobile device.

Users pay only for what they use :-

Use free client software- Users can run most SaaS apps directly from their web browser without needing to download and install any software, although some apps require plugins. This means that you don’t need to purchase and install special software for your users. So you can sign up and rapidly start using innovative business apps.

No data is lost if your computer breaks, as data is in the cloud

2. Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)

IaaS is the lowest and basic level of cloud solution and refers to cloud-based computing infrastructure as a fully-outsourced service. This involves pre-installed and configured hardware or software through a virtualized interface. With IaaS, you rent IT infrastructure—servers and virtual machines (VMs), storage, networks, operating systems—from a cloud service provider on a pay-as-you-go basis. IaaS helps you save money - expense and complexity of buying and managing your own physical servers and other datacenter infrastructure. You will only need to rent a particular resource as long as you need it as each resource is offered as a separate service component. The cloud computing service provider manages the infrastructure, while you purchase, install, configure and manage your own software—operating systems, middleware and applications.

The benefits of IaaS :-

Eliminates capital expense and reduces ongoing cost specially for small business & startup.

Helps to improve business continuity and manage disaster recovery. It cuts down expenses of technology and staff.

Launch of new product/ service made easy - The necessary computing infrastructure can be ready in minutes or hours, rather than the days, weeks or months to set up internally.

Focus on your core business - IaaS frees up organization to focus on their core business rather than on IT infrastructure.

No maintenance cost - With IaaS there is no need to maintain and upgrade software and hardware or troubleshoot equipment problems. The cloud service provider assures that your infrastructure is reliable and meets SLAs.

Better security- A cloud service provider can provide security for your applications and data that may be better than what you can attain in-house.

Gets new apps to users faster- You can get them to users faster with IaaS as you don’t need to first set up the infrastructure before you can develop and deliver apps.

3. Platform as a Service (PaaS)

PaaS refers to cloud computing services that gives an on-demand environment for developing, testing, delivering and managing software applications. PaaS makes it easy for developers to develop, run, and manage applications without having to get caught up in servers, storage, network, code, infrastructure needed for development. PaaS can be pay-as-you-go basis as you can get resources from cloud service provider and access them over a secure Internet connection. PaaS supports complete web application lifecycle: building, testing, deploying, managing and updating.

PaaS is much more than IaaS. PaaS not only includes infrastructure—servers, storage and networking—but also also includes middleware, development tools, business intelligence (BI) services, database management systems and more.

The benefits of PaaS :-

Cost Saving- PaaS allows you to avoid the expense and complexity of buying and managing software licenses, the underlying application infrastructure and middleware or the development tools and other resources.

Time Saving- PaaS development tools can save the time it takes to code new apps with pre-coded application components built into the platform.

No additional workforce- Platform as a Service components can give your development team new capabilities without your needing to add staff having the required skills.

Develop for multiple platform- Cloud service providers gives you development options for multiple platforms, such as computers, mobile devices and browsers making cross-platform apps quicker and easier to develop.

Affordability- Organisations can use sophisticated development software, business intelligence and analytics tools on pay-as-you-go model basis that one cannot afford to purchase outright.

Support team work that are remotely based- Development teams can work together on projects even when team members are in remote locations as the development environment is accessed over the Internet.

Support complete web application lifecycle- Building, testing, deploying, managing and updating within the same integrated environment.
